Rating: - a change of pace for a snobbish America
it *amazes* me how close-minded we as Americans can be. the lyrics spit and flow pumped on here is as good as any i've heard, and i've been listening to hip-hop since i was eating baby food. the accent is a bit thick, but then again, to the rest of the world, so is an American accent. just take it as flavor, and listen with an open mind. this is tight and i hope to see a lot more from them in the future.
Rating: - Yes, he's British. Yes, it works.
My decision to buy this CD was based soley on various reviews I'd read (and the fact that this album was nominated for a Mercury Award). It was well worth it. Mike Skinner (the rapper/producer behind The Streets) has done what many have argued was impossible: he's made a decent rap album without foregoing his British accent, a feat made possible by his revolutionary idea: RAP ALBUMS DON'T NEED TO BE HIP-HOP ALBUMS. Instead of hip-hop beats imported from our side of the Atlantic, he uses the Garage Techno of his native country. However, it's not just his beats that make this a worthy listen, as Skinner is also rather talented as a rapper. Granted, he's not in the same league as Eminem or Nas, but his undulating, conversational flow is unique. Of course, it takes a few listens to get used to this flow, but once you're used to it, it can be quite entertaining. However, while his delivery is perhaps his weakest point, he more than makes up for it with his lyrics. It's clear that Mike Skinner truly believes in keeping it real: the farthest away from home he gets are all-night drinking binges in Amsterdam. And, while he does have a tendency to be melodramatic, his sense of humor is second to none. To wit: "The Irony Of It All," which contains perhaps the most entertaining character created by a rapper since, well, Slim Shady, is the only rap song that has ever caused me to laugh out loud. All in all, this is a solid debut. It certainly has its faults, but Mike Skinner has definately set the bar high for his second album.
Rating: - English Rap? An Oxymoron?
I heard so much about The Streets (Mike Skinner) before their album landed on American shores. I usually don't buy into hype.... okay, I do. So I naturally went out & bought this as soon as I saw the cheap domestic price. Maybe it was the price, or the excellent album cover (evokes modern northern English working class perfectly), but there's something about this album that I took a liking to immediately. Anyway, the music itself is awesome. I can't relate to a lot of things Mike Skinner sings/raps about, but it's clearly 100% pathos. I know a lot of American rap is heartfelt, honest, confessional, etc, but the simple fact is I can't listen to much of it. For starters, most American rap as of lately is sampled hits of the 70's or 80's (sung by a female) with a male rapping over the verses. Hardly original. (I know that is a gross generalization, & there are plenty of original rappers, but there's a lot of truth to my statement). The Streets' lyrics are brutally honest- mostly the life of a young working class bloke from Birmingham (hanging around the flat, video games, curries, drinking lager.... okay, there's more to it than that, take my word for it). Skinner's a slightly cockey pseudo-philosopher with a lot of interesting things to say... in his slangy Cockney accent. It's priceless. He's not irate, sexist, & hostile like most American rappers (again with the stereotypes, I know). But the music is what makes it great. For starters, it's music. Like, strings, organs, trumpets & everything. It's not just a paltry beat box or anything. I'd actually classify it as chill-out/electronica music as oppose to rap. Most of The Streets' listeners are hipster fans of Britpop & the indie music scene (okay, that's me), but I'm waiting for it to catch on amongst American rap fans. Again, it's not the rap Americans are used to hearing, but if it were, I'd be happy.
