Average Rating: Rating: - as creative as top 40 pop is gonna get So No Doubt decided to make things a little more poppy, fun, and radiofriendly, after 2000's disappointing sales-wise yet highly under rated "Return of Saturn". But their approach is pretty good. I wrote a review when the album came out, slamming this album for selling out to a TRL pop crowd even more, but the truth is they sold out a long time ago with Tragic Kingdom and the song "Dont Speak". But in a world of Britney Spears, if you are gonna get played on the radio and have 2 top 10 singles, (well, Hella Good is on its way) you mine as well mix some elements to make it creative, and that is what they have done here. Hey Baby and Hella Good, although very plain and dull for No Doubt, adds a little bit of spice and differing elements to the radio. Songs like "Underneath it All" are addictive, and could be huge hits at top 40 radio, and at the same time introducing true Reggae beats (sorry guys Shaggy doesnt cut it) back to the mainstream. So may No Doubt be happy in the music path they have chosen. Rating: - Gwen & Company Keep It Rock Steady After enjoying the dark and more personal "Return of Saturn", I anticipated a great new follow-up. I recieved what I wanted, a great record, for the exact opposite reasons the previously mentioned disc was good. Energetic, happy, and danceable, "Rock Steady" takes the group to another place. After some choice collaborations with Moby on his track "South Side" and Eve on her smash "Let Me Blow Ya Mind". Gwen takes what she's learned from exploring new styles of music and mixes it up with a dance hall vibe. The result is a pop record with a tougher No Doubt edge, but the energy and danceability of your Britney Spears. It's different from before, but that's something that really makes this shine. Mixing Gwen's lyrics, reggae energy, and some very qualified producers, the songs that really leave a mark include the first release "Hey Baby, and the tracks "Hella Good" and "Making Out". All three are particularly good, and show of the new eclectic sound that is No Doubt. Rating: - An Interesting Experiment This is probably not what diehard No Doubt fans were expecting, but that does not make it a bad album. I loved Return of Saturn, but this is a very catchy offering from Gwen, et. al. They even add a dash of reggae. Here are the highlights: 1. Intro - really unnecessary, merely a clip from Rock Steady 2. Hella Good - an uptempo tune with a grinding beat. kind of reminds me of Til I Die on Beautiful Garbage with the repeating guitar hook 6. Detective - easily the worst song of the CD. this one's over the edge of sugary pop. 5. Underneath It All & 8. Start the Fire - a little reggae, mon 7. Don't Let Me Down & 11. Platinum Blonde Life - these songs are the truest to the old No Doubt sound 12. Waiting Room - the highlight of the album. This track done with Prince is a true gem. One other thing to consider with this album: if you liked the changes on Beautiful Garbage, you will like this album too. Enjoy it for what it is.
