Average Rating:
Rating: - Ahhh... REAL latin music!
After hearing this so-called "Latin pop explosion" of Ricky Martin, Jennufer Lopez, and whatnot, it shocks me how absolutely none of it sounds like real Latin music. Is there really anything Latin about "Waiting For Tonight" or "Livin' La Vida Loca"? I'm serious! (Excuse me while I digress here, but you want real Latin music try the "Buena Vista Social Club" album! It's great! It's a classic! It was recorded by a bunch of 90 year old Cubans! Or better yet, if you haven't seen the film "Buena Vista Social Club", please rent it tonight. Awesome. THAT'S Latin music for ya!) Which brings me to the point of this review: "Supernatural" also is Latin music! And it goes beyond "Smooth"! Heard those Lauryn Hill or Dave Matthews songs? Great. "Smooth" has conga drums in it! And the guitar part could have been lifted straight from "Black Magic Woman" (remember that? Way back in the sixties? Oh wait. Sorry. I forgot. Most fans of this album probably have absolutely no idea who Carlos Santana IS! If you haven't picked up his older stuff I strongly recommend it. Especially "Evil Ways"! I adore that song with all my heart! You know, the one with the guitar riff goin' "Ba ba ba ba-da-da ba da BUM"! Aww amn... _Great_ song.) Oh and maybe this is just me, but isn't it nice, to hear a guitar solo that actually is hard to play? Listen to Carlos rip it up in "Smooth". The guy's a freekin' virtuoso! I air guitar along with him! Just brilliant. This is probably my favorite popular mainstream corporate rock album of the past year. Sure it's a sell-out (why else would Carlos have hired Clive Davis of all people to produce this), but so what? It's such a great album. Give me this over Ricky Martin ANY day of the week! At least Carlos HAS SOME DANG TALENT! Some of these songs are pretty awful (like the Everlast or Eric Clapton ones, for instance), but that's okay because he plays them very well. It's easily the best thing he's done since "Abraxas", and believe me that's quite a feat. That was released over TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO! Do you have any idea how long of a time that is? Don't forget: twenty five years after "Hound Dog", Elvis was already dead! I really hate Matchbox 20 though. All their songs sound the same. But here Rob's voice goes well with Carlos' style of playing. But that's just me. What do YOU think about "Supernatural"?
Rating: - I can't in good conscience recommend this. Sorry.
Most notably missing here is the interplay among musicians that is the essence of music. Except in "The Calling", Carlos takes all the solos, and it sounds as if he's dubbed them over existing tracks; the other musicians seem perfectly oblivious to everything he plays. Contrast this with "Treat" (from the first Santana album) in which Carlos trades lines with Greg Rolie or with "Guajira" (from the third Santana album) which features fine trumpet, piano, and Neal Schon guitar solos. The "guests" here feel obliged to invoke Latin cliches in their music or lyrics or to take Carlos himself as a subject ("Santana licks the guits with precision/Not accidental, intentional conscious decision", "She fell in love in East L.A. to the sound of a guitar/Yeah, Yeah, played by Carlos Santana", etc.) Needless to say, this sort of thing is obtrusive and annoying and, of course, corny as hell. If you don't already own them, buy Santana's first four albums (and "Love, Devotion, Surrender" with John McLaughlin) instead.Recommended (for guitarists too): PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
Rating: - The "Come Back" Album Of All Time
After 30 years in the music biz, guitar legend Carlos Santana could have easily retired, without being able to say that he had ever had a hit record. But in the summer of '99, the first single off the album (Smooth) got played more and more. And the single started selling. First it went gold, then platinum, then nearly double platinum. In the meantime the album was doing the same. And by February of 2000 the world watched Santana sweep the Grammys after Supernatural garnered up 9 awards. Including Record, Song, and Album of the year honors. And now Supernatural has sold over 13 millions copies. If I were Santana, I'd consider the retiring thing again. And with good reason. Supernatural is one of the greatest collaborative efforts the music world has seen in many years. All the tracks contain superstars like Dave Matthews, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eric Clapton. The album has possesses a great production quality an sounds great! This album would also become one of Clive Davis' last albums that he produced before he retired from the music business last spring. And now Davis, Santana, and the rest of the world had a chance to expirience something really great in Supernatural.
