Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Thriller
Who in the world hasn't heard this LP? It's sheer stature and unimaginable sales have guaranteed it and it's creators legendary status, and with it's 20th anniversary approaching one wonders, does "Thriller" still deserve all the accolades it recieves? My answer is a resounding yes, but with a record of this magnitude, popularity and influence it's easy to overlook the quality of the music and focus solely on sales, awards and the thousands of imitators that followed it. The fact is, "Thriller" is a brilliant extension of the fine work Jackson and producer Quincy Jones began on "Off The Wall", only without that LP's disco influence overriding the project. The first notes of "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" tell the story, it's a chugging, techno-funk beat that never lets up until the Swahili chant (ma ma se ma ma ma ma ma cu sa!) enters and drives the song into the stratosphere! You're left stunned and exhilarated all at once! "Baby Be Mine" is a fairly straighforward R&B number with a slippery, funky worm type synth line and whomping bassline complementing Michael's fine, seductive vocals. Mentioning the hits at this point is almost beside the point since we all know them, but I must point out how daring and innovative "Beat It" still sounds, actually it has a raw, punkish attack that further belies it's theme of anti-violence; when Eddie Van Halen rips into his solo, you feel liberated and more alive, able to take on all comers! "Human Nature" is still the prettiest melody to ever grace a Jackson album ("Stranger In Moscow" is a close second) and it's arrangement hints at progressive jazz. The real crown jewel here is the closer, "Lady In My Life" which is probably the finest vocal performance of Michael's career and presents him in his true element, singing live in front of real instruments. This is the sound a man baring his soul and not caring about his pride or ego (witness his pleading as the track fades out) and the funk/jazz leanings of the music elevate this song far above the realm of soul.
"Thriller" was a once in a lifetime phenomenom as pop culture goes, but musically speaking it still buries everything else out there. Now that the hype has faded, all that remains is the music, and it's astounding music. This is truly deserving of the label "CLASSIC". Indespensible.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Classic
What can I say about this album that hasn't already been said or heard. It's a wonderful album, one which I still listen to this day. This album is one of those essentials. I remember I bought about 5-6 copies of this album because we listen to it so much over the years that they either get scratched beyond belief, lost from always being out of the cd case from excessive use, etc. I love it and always will. Great album, great artist.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Unquestionably the best Pop / R&B album ever
I can't believe the few Amazon reviews I've read that give this album anything less than five stars. This album has incredible staying power! Listen to the songs today that sample MJ's tracks and elements of his music! I'm in my early 20s and every time I go to a party and the DJ spins a cut from this wax, the dance floor gets packed! Every song is a bona-fide classic. Sure, some songs(Thriller, Beat-It, Billie Jean)got a great push from the early MTV hype machine, but the songs are still great in and of themselves. The album's best efforts are the ones never released on video (PYT, Baby Be Mine, Lady in My Life, Human Nature). If you don't like the album you're welcome to your opinion, but don't discredit the influence of this pop masterpiece. The production team was incredible and there will probably never be another album whose appeal crossed racial, gender, economic and generational lines like this one did.
