Average Rating:
Rating: - OFF TO GOOD START WITH A NEW RECORD LABEL
Styx starts off their new cd with a one two punch, Light up, and Lorreli. Both songs sung by Dennis show the growing range of his vocals, and the range of his keyboards. The cd is very keyboard driven, and very well produced. Both songs, along with this cd's Suite Madame Blue are Styx' classics. Lonely Child and Midnight Ride are you typical Dennis, and JY songs. Mother Dear would be JC's last song for Styx (he would leave the group before they would start this tour). Born for Adventure, is a good rocker. Overall not a bad start with their new record label, and it stands up to the test of time.
Rating: - The Beginning of Musical Progression For Styx
Styx's first album with A&M, 1975's "Equinox" marked the beginning of the band's musical progression (not to say that their previous combination of classical movements and mystic rock and roll had lost its flame). "Equinox" shows the first major departure from their trademark mixture of classical arrangements and hard rock, but still represented here with the enigmatic 'Prelude 12' but most notably, the magnificent epic 'Suite Madame Blue,' boasting John Curulewski's blistering yet graceful guitar work and Dennis DeYoung's lyrics blending poetry with politics (just in time for America's upcoming bicentennial the following year). 'Midnight Ride' is a dazzling arrangement, full of Styx's musical imagination, while 'Lorelei' introduced Styx fans to their unique brand of artistic pomp tunes, with a pop-like melody, combining folk legends and romance. "Equinox" proved Styx's progression and musical horizons, revealing their synthesized world of guitars, keyboards, and pure arena-style magic.
Rating: - Nice One
Styx finally got hooked up with a decent record label and the results speak for themselves. A complete turnaround from 1974's Man of Miracles, especially in the production department. JY's Midnight Ride would be the first in many riff-oriented songs Styx fans could always count on. Dennis adds flair to songs such as Light Up, Loreli and Lonely Child. More good guitar work is incorporated in Born For Adventure and an anthem of sorts, Suite Madame Blue. Nice way to kick off the big break A&M Records gave them.
