Average Rating: Rating: - 90s Essential You never know what you're going to get with Beck. With him that is a good thing. He excells at doing the unusual and mixing sounds that seem like exact opposites, but he pulls it off. On Odelay, my personal fave of his great catalog, we get jazz, country, blues, hard rock, rap, hip hop, and folk all blended wonderfully into this 90s classic. Not only are the hits like "Devil's Haircut," "New Pollution," and "Where It's At" her but the rest of the tracks are right up with them. Again, Beck has so many influences that this album is great for anyone with any music tastes at all. An instant classic, this album will probably be looked at 25 years down the road as one of the true masterpieces of the 90s. Rating: - Insane mixture of styles and samples What can I add but my five star vote and to chime in "Pure Genius?" "High Five" may be my favorite track because it always makes me laugh to myself. In fact, Beck's off-hand humor is pretty evident throughout. Doesn't anyone else think this guy is full of bizarre, often dry humor? On MELLOW GOLD it was "Truckdriving Neighbors Downstairs" that had me rolling. I also really dig "Hot Wax" and "Jack-Ass." Although the whole album is truly excellent, the only thing that I don't like - no, absolutely can't stand and run for the fast-forward button when it comes on - is the intro to "New Pollution" and some of the monotone noise tacked onto the end of "Novacane." Maybe it's just me, but I find these segments of noise irritating. I wish he hadn't put them on because sometimes I won't put on this album because I don't want to deal with it. I guess it's just another way for Beck to mess with our heads. Rating: - Wow - Beck's finest album, no doubt Unbelievable. Beck just splices together apparently every genre of music that exists and goes nuts. From country ("Lord Only Knows") to hip-hop ("High 5 (Rock The Catskills)") to punk ("Minus"), everything here is grounded in some genre but changes the formula up a lot. Most impressive of all, though, is the fact that the songwriting doesn't suffer. Everything on the album is catchy and well-written. If any complaints can be given, it's that th Dust Brothers didn't make as good an album as "Paul's Boutique". But then again, picking on an album for not being as good as "Paul's Boutique" is like criticizing a painting for not equaling the Mona Lisa. One of the 90's most creative albums.
