Average Rating: Rating: - Something Special "Zaireeka" was a great idea. (It's shocking that Warner Brothers gave this idea the go ahead.) Unfortunately a lot of people were turned off by the idea of having to get four CD players to hear all of the disc's at once. But this is a great record everyone should expirience. "Zaireeka" can be listened to one disc at a time. It's interesting because at times there is total silence then, BAM!! over driven drums blasting out of the speakers. I really love this record. When you get all four discs going at once it's amazing. Even shocking. Sounds fill the room. Its like swimming in the songs, that's the best way I can describe it. A sonic wash that carried you away. Really amazing. Besides the expirimental factor this is also some of the Flaming Lips best music. Some of the melodies I feel were reused for songs on "The Soft Bullitin" and even "Yoshimi". Start them at once, two at a time, all four at different times. That's the point. Rating: - The Lips' Masterpiece...so lets get it mixed down! I have the mixdown version of this cd and am writing my review based upon that version. I appreciate experiments in musical presentation (Aphex Twin's SAW II comes to mind) and would love to be able to replicate four sources every time I listen to this release, but that is nearly impossible and the thing is this release if astonishing and I want to hear it a lot. The fact is this album is not the bridge between Soft Bulletin and their previous alt rock releases...it is beyond the Soft Bulletin. It is the sound of Radiohead 20 years from now. Think of Yoshimi meets Stars of the Lid. In short, this is an amazing work. And that is probably because of the way Wayne set it up. To fill up that many channels the band had to create sounds beyond the norm and they do it brilliantly. The sad fact is that many people, including many serious Lips' fans, don't know of the merit and brilliance of this release because they do not have to means (and maybe the desire) to hear it in its glory. Admittedly it is a fairly taxing process to undergo. Because of this fact, I can only hope that the band decide to release this masterwork as a single cd remastered to fit that format. This work deserves to be heard on a mass scale, it is revolutionary and without precident and should be realized for the acheivement it is. Those comments aside, if you have the means to reproduce this album in your home - BUY IT! This is the apex of the Lips. Rating: - One of the Greatest Albums I've Ever Heard in My Life!! Well I was going to say "One of the greatest albums of all-time" but how can I be familiar with EVERY single album that's EVER been made in ANY genre EVER in music history. I can't. Anybody that says something like "This is the Greatest Album of all-time!" is really stupid. Like me for example. Anyway, stop reading this and just buy the dang thing. "Zaireeka" by the Flaming Lips. It's too good for words. In fact buy two copies and keep one sealed. No, buy three copies keep one sealed, and save one so that in case one of the four discs gets scratched you have another copy. The reason why you MUST keep one sealed is because it will be worth A LOT of money someday. In ten years, and not a moment sooner, it will become apparent just how ahead of their time the Flaming Lips actually were. Now then what is "Zaireeka"? It's 4 cds meant to be played on four different stereos at the SAME TIME!! It gives a huge arena-like effect to the sound. And you can play it one CD at a time, or all four cds at the same time, or cds 2 & 4 together, or 1 & 2 & 4, or any way you can think of. YOU control the way the music is presented!!!! Isn't that great?? Yes, you little savage it is, since there are, ummmm NINETEEN different ways to listen to the dang thing!!! And with, let's see 4 cds x 2 speakers each stereo/boombox, there are EIGHT speakers each pulsing with sound coming at you from eight different directions!!!!! Geniuses, pure Geniuses. And dig those dog barkings at the very end! So the Flaming Lips make a truly transcendant album and all they get is a LIMITED EDITION OF 5,000 AND ABSOLUTELY NO PRESS OR HYPE AT ALL. And some people actually think the Backstreet Boys are the greatest band in the world! Sheesh.
