Average Rating: Rating: - Who Invited You? The Donnas. People tend to pigeon hole these gals as just another chick band who can't play. But after becoming a fan in 1999 I realized first hand that these girls were in it for blood. Their newest album with Atlantic (but not the first they have released 5 other albums under Lookout! With a buku of 7" Vinyl's) Spend The Night puts them up there with the likes of AC/DC or Kiss with their hard rockin' riffs and twisted sexual references. "Don't wanna go to the mall, don't wanna go to the movies. I think we've done it all. Just take me to the backseat" is a line from one of my favorite tracks off Spend The Night, blatantly titled "Take Me To The Backseat". These girls DO know how to rock. Donna R aka Allison Robertson does a mean solo on almost every track that will blow your mind. Along with Donna C (Torry Castalleno) whaling away on drums, cowbell included. Donna A (Brett Anderson) with her raspy whisper on "To Bad About Your Girl" will make you skin tingle. And Donna F (Maya Ford) keeps a mean bass line like no other. Spend The Night is 13 tracks of straight up, balls to the wall Rock N Roll fun that hasn't been heard for a while. I recommend this CD to any guy or girl who is looking for some fresh air. Rating: - Riotous Fun! My second favorite Donnas CD, right behind "Get Skintight." The Donnas are moving away from their blatant earlier influences, like the Ramones, and finally coming up with their own riotous hard-rock bad-girl sound. In a sea of terribly mediocre male-led rock bands...they are a complete standout, and pretty outstanding! They have a great muscular layered guitar sound that puts any peers to shame Its worth it for "Who Invited You" and "Take it Off" alone, but every track has their patented teenage bratty sex-kitten sound that will rock any dorm room or frat house, or condo (as the case may be). In a time where mindless bubblegum pop rules amid a few ambitious great rock outfits, the Donnas are a real welcomed guilty pleasure. FYI: If you have a Mac like I do, you'll have no problem playing the CD and copying the tracks to your favorite MP3 program, like iTunes. An external CD burner is what I would recommend for those who can't play CDs like these on their computers. Rating: - Rock Rock Rock N Roll If I could give it six stars, I would. This CD is unlike anything you've ever heard before. It's the Donnas at their absolute best (yet). "Spend the Night" shows the amazing progression of guitarist Donna R since the days of the s/t album. Donna C on drums and Donna F on bass keep things grounded with a steady beat and Donna A exhibits a vocal range never heard before. The production is great and every song is as big as it can get. While it's apparent the young ladies have matured greatly as musicians it's good to know that they still sing about the same great stuff. Tracks like "It's on the Rocks," "Dirty Denim" and "Not the One" put guys in their place. And if you're looking for an awesome guitar solo you'll find it in "5 O'Clock in the Morning." Great lyrics, catchy riffs and fist pumping rock and roll anthems. This CD is not to be missed!
