"I'm an American aquarium drinker/I assassin down the avenue".Beautiful lines. Not sure about their exact meaning, but reading them I can't help feeling excited and almost overwhelmed by their greatness. Listening to Jeff Tweedy singing the aformentioned lines in the first track of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot(cool title!)is a different story. His voice sounds so empty, boring and annoying. The music completely kills the mood. The song drags on for 7 minutes or so,and it does nothing but watering down all the excitment and awe you felt before. 7 minutes! I surely didn't wait for that damn song to finish, after the first seconds of butchery I guess I gave it a couple minutes to see if it got better. It didn't. The other songs,I heard snippets here and there, and never a riff,a melody,a rhythm,a sound grabbed me. I spent an evening or two just navigating through the album trying to find something worthwile without falling asleep. I didn't. I love weird music with an experimental side that maintains melody, but this thing is just boring. It doesn't sound edgy and interesting-just boring. But the lyrics are so good I can't give it less than two stars. I suggest that the next time maybe Jeff Tweedy should simply print a book and stop "experimenting" with music.
Rating: - Don't Believe the Hype
This is my first Wilco disc. I know they are a critically acclaimed band and this disc has really been blown up. I bought this disc on the basis of the rave reviews it was getting from everyone. I must say, I am thoroughly disappointed. I have listened to the cd many times and find nothing ground breaking or moving. The first song is a good song as well as the "Heavy Metal Drummer" song but for me that is where it ends. It's just boring and droll. If that is what they were going for, they nailed it. Beck's "Sea Change" blows this away.
Rating: - Distance has no way of making love understandable
Who's laughing now, Reprise? Let's just hope Wilco earns 100 times as much as they spent in buying back their song rights. Any summary I can give won't do this masterpiece justice, especially since the giddy word-of-mouth milieu surrounding YHF would have already convinced the curious fan to lend an ear by now. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a heartwrenching work I first heard in those numbing days following 9/11, and I suspected part of the album was recorded as mystified reaction (specifically, the brilliant 4-5-6 punch of "War on War" "Jesus, Etc." and "Ashes of American Flags"). In the end that wasn't the case, of course, but the temptation to draw eerie parallels is a testament to Jeff Tweedy's lyrical genius rather than my overactive imagination. There will be many summaries exploring the nuances of each song on YHF. Lacking the eloquence to capture in words the sui generis phenomenon that is this album, I can only paraphrase Wittgenstein, poorly: "Don't read, listen!" And whoever at Reprise decided this album wasn't worth signing....are you the same person who decided to draft Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan?
