Average Rating: 4.12 out of 5 stars

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not exactly a follow up
Damon Gough himself said that this is not an official follow-up to Bewilderbeast, and that his next album will retreat back to his more experimental style.

What must be understood about the About a Boy soundtrack is that it is a soundtrack for a movie. Anyone who has seen the film would understand that BDB's Bewilderbeast style would not fully fit in with the mood set by the movie. Damon Gough instead opted for the poppier, more accessible sound that would enhance the movie.

With that aside, there are still many stand out tracks. River, Sea, Ocean does indeed sound like a lost track to Bewilderbeast, and Above You Below Me, my pick for the album's best, oddly reminds me of the soundtrack to Pippen. File me away is a strange little ditty that took me months to figure out if I liked it or hated it (I like it). Silent Sigh is a sufficient track, but it is made great by I Love NYE, the extended introduction to Sigh.

The About a Boy soundtrack is a worthy effort by Gough, but it falters because it sounds too much like Gough had to play under someone else's rules. Regardless, this album is worth picking up if you liked what you heard so far (and don't be discouraged by 5that useless first track interlude.)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - really good for a soundtrack
I just saw the movie, which is excellent, and now I have a face to the music I've been listening to the last two weeks. "About a Boy" doesn't qualify as a follow up to the fab "Hour of Bewilderbeast" but it none the less has some really great moments of music like "river sea ocean", "something to Talk about", and "Sileint Sigh". Some of the instrumentals do not work outside of being the background music in the movie such as "SPAT" which is a little annoying in it's mindless repetition.
Badly Drawn Boy is a very talented "band" that has a great knack for writing songs that seem to just roll strait from his thoughts to the music- I mean it seems like he does this in his sleep. I recommend this as an excellent soundtrack and a pretty good Badly Drawn Boy album- Hour of Bewilderbeast is the one to get and then once you realize how fantistic this music is you might want to check out this one.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Soundtrack But Not The Follow Up!
It was always going to be difficult for Damon Gough or Badly Drawn Boy to follow up the amazing "Hour Of The Bewilderbeast"-so rather then give us a proper follow up he has decided to give us a film soundtrack instead. It's a very clever move you have to say and one where everyone's a winner. Firstly it will stop the most likely endless disgruntled punters saying it's not as good as the first and of course as it's a soundtrack my expectations were inevitably lowered. So those expecting something along the lines of that first c.d. will be a bit disappointed-but having said that taken in it's own right this is a really good c.d.

"About A Boy" is the soundtrack to the new film based on High Fidelity man Nick Hornby's latest screen adaptation. All the music is done by Badly Drawn Boy and it's a really good mixture of instrumental tracks which are surprisingly good and act as short interludes to the longer tracks that have vocals. Most of the songs are like the gentler tracks on Hour Of...There isn't half as much experimentation or variety as there was on that c.d. It does have some tracks that are amongst the best I've heard him do. "Something To Talk About" is about as commercial as he may yet get-it's a gentle acoustic track which sounds a bit like Travis without all those new twee lyrics. Plenty of the tracks have really good orchestration in the background-the strings backing the acoustic jazzy sounds of the band on "Above You Below Me" make this another great track. The amazing 2 minute instrumental "I Love NYE" leads perfectly into "Silent Sigh" which was the first single from this c.d. It has a piano which moves gently up and down the scales while Gough does his first falsetto attempt. This track keeps building as gorgeous vocal harmonies lead this to a nice crescendo-Gough really gets quite animated in his vocals by the end of the track-you may have never heard him like this before. Many of the instrumental tracks are hard to distinguish from one another-they all seem to have the acoustic being strummed to glorious strings-but they serve as the perfect anticipation for the vocal tracks. "River,Sea,Ocean" sounds so like a track from the first c.d. It has the usual slightly off-key vocals that then drift into harmonies to die for. It moves along at a good merry pace and shows that even the simplest tracks often become the most memorable.

The latter tracks may not be as good as the very strong opening-but track 10 is an amazing instrumental track. Drum Programmes, funky guitar and a really cool brass section give this one a real kick. I think the album could have done with a few louder tracks as it all becomes pretty much the same after a while. "Walking Out Of Stride" is a good example of this-don't get me wrong it's a very good song but it sounds like some of the other stuff heard earlier yet maybe not as memorable. "File Me Away" is very different-I'm not yet sure if I like it or not. Gough sounds lie he's woken up with the worst hangover ever and his vocals are totally off-kilter yet he's backed up by some beautiful backing vocals. The music has that unusual quirky flavour you hear on some of Eel's more unusual tracks. Track 14 is more soft sounds-one man his guitar and a harmonica-nothing too special. The whole c.d. closes with a Christmas song done in B.D.B's own unusual style. This c.d. is really very good and should keep are interest levels and our anticipation very high for the proper follow up later this year to his debut.
