Rating: - The Fuhrer of Soundtracks...
I adored this show, and I really wish I had seen it with the original cast. However, the writing is so brilliant, and the songs so catchy, Brad Oscar and Steven Weber seemed fabulous. Almost immediately after seeing the show, I listened to the soundtrack. Filled with fabulous music, witty lyrics, and great voices, my only problem with it is the slight social disadvantage of singing 'Springtime for Hitler' in the middle of my school corridors. My favourite songs are plentiful and only include 'I Wanna Be a Producer', (which really resonated with me and has me constantly humming) 'Keep it Gay', 'King of Broadway', 'Haben Sie Gehort Das Deutsche Band?', 'Springtime for Hitler', and 'When You Got It, Flaunt It'. I can't say enough about the fabulous orchestrations, which really make the soundtrack. For the people who say that the show is tasteless, morally wrong, or racist, I think that Mel Brooks has done a great job keeping the show funny, while also keeping it at a level that is playful enough not to be insulting. I love the way Nathan Lane can make a great Max Bialystock, and Matthew Broderick a great Leo Bloom, even with only sound. And yes, both voices, even Matthew Broderick who is sometimes so wrongly slammed, were incredible. I gave a soundtrack to my parents, and they were so successful in shouting the soundtrack's praises, that now my grandparents and numerous friends of the family now own soundtracks, and I'm starting to feel like 'The Producers's personal publicity agent. So, to sum up. Buy this soundtrack! The lyrics will have you singing, the characters will have you smiling, and the overall feeling will have you searching long and hard for a better soundtrack. I disagree with some who say that no one should listen to the CD before they see the show, although before playing it or giving it to someone who hasn't seen it, explain the pretence a bit; I've gotten some pretty confused expressions at some of the songs. And how do you think I reacted when I learned 'The Producers' was coming to Toronto? Let's just say I was humming 'Haben Sie Gehort Das Deutsche Band' a lot more in computer classes...
Rating: - Back to the Future with Uncle Mel
My wife and I were lucky enough to see the show in previews on Broadway and we haven't stopped laughing yet. The CD contains music which SOUNDS like tunes you've heard before -- even a casual listening will prompt you to think of Gypsy, Bye Bye Birdie, A Funny Thing Happened . . ., How To Succeed . . ., Fiddler on the Roof and at least a half-dozen other shows. It's as if someone dug this recording out of a circa 1950 time capsule. This isn't meant to say the show is merely derivative. In fact, I consider the broadly familiar sound a strong positive factor. So is the madcap humor and pacing, both of the songs and the production as a whole. Indeed, one of the show-stoppers on this cast recording is "The King of Old Broadway" and that's what this entire show is: a fabulous throwback to the old Broadway of classic American musical comedy of the mid-20th century. Three minutes into this CD you'll know you're NOT listening to a Disney show nor one composed by a Brit with three names. Mel Brooks' tunes are catchy and singable and his lyrics are Noel Coward-sharp. (Just see if you can get these ditties out of your head!) The CD comes with a nice extra: extensive liner notes which include the complete lyrics and spoken interludes of every song. The songs on the recording are well-played by an enthusiastic orchestra -- Glen Kelly's fine arrangements and orchestrations flesh out Mel's tunes. The singing is uniformly good, an occasional flat note not withstanding, and the interpreations are inspired. When Max/Nathan Lane tells Leo/Matthew Broderick near the end of the show, "I never realized you're a good singer" it's more than a line of dialogue. It's actually true. If you're lucky enough to see the show, the CD is the ultimate souvenir. If you haven't seen it, the CD will more than tide you over until you do. And if "The Producers" inspires a renewal of the American musical comedy genre in the next few years (let's face it, success breeds imitation), then we all have Mel Brooks and company to thank or, to parody one of his own songs from the show: Broadway going nowhere in a hurry . . . 'til him. Bland and spiceless, never ever curry . . . 'til him. Mel's schtick changed the Great White Way. It's no longer prim. Oi vay, let's hope there's at least another one . . . like him.
Rating: - Greatest cast album in years
As a collector and connoiseur of Broadway cast albums "The Producers" ranks as pure joy. How could this show miss? It has Mel Brooks who created the zany film in 1968. I have not seen the show yet but the score is "fun". Some people have put it down and said it is servicable. It's not Sondheim or Rogers & Hammerstein but it is pure "musical COMEDY". Just listening to the cd the songs eventually get stuck in your head. Nathan Lane does a career topping turn as Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick holds his own as Leo Bloom. The cast sounds wonderful. It's wonderful to have such a great show back on Broadway. It should run for years. If anyone is contemplating getting tickets do it now. I got ticket last week for October. I almost choked to pay the $ but I'm sure it will be worth every penny. Quit reading this and go listen to "The Producers."
