Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lea Salonga has an extraordinary, gorgeous singing voice!!!
Just bought my FDS CD today and all I can say is it is FANTASTIC!!! From the very first time Ms. Salonga opens her mouth to sing, I was hooked. IMHO, she possesses one of the most beautiful and melodious voices in Broadway today. Her leading man, Jose Llana is equally wonderful. I definitely prefer this over the original CD. After listening to this fabulous CD a couple times, I immediately bought tickets for next month in Broadway. Very highly recommended!!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Flower Drum Song" Flowers Again!
This Broadway Cast Recording is a gourgeous rendition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. "Flower Drum Song" has been somewhat forgotten over the years, and its score remains one of their most underrated. The current, thoroughly revised Broadway revival has some notable scripting problems, and it left me with the overall feeling that I wished the production was a might bit better. However, the score itself is ravishingly performed, both on stage and on this CD, and the voices of Lea Salonga and Jose Llana lend might and beauty to gorgeous new arrangements. While some of the songs in this score haven't aged quite well, in particular "Chop Suey" and the pre-feminist "I Enjoy Being a Girl", they are given a sense of fun and urgency that saves them from the relic bin. However, it's the ballads and love songs that put this show over and make it worth savoring. Lea Salonga, in particular, does her regal best with "A Hundred Million Miracles" and "I Am Going to Like it Here". And "Love Look Away", formerly a ballad for a character no longer in the show, is now her eleven o'clock number, and its exquisite. Jose Llana's tenor lends itself well to "You Are Beautiful" and "Sunday", and brings urgency to "Like a God", which is probably the best song in this powerful score. Sandra Allen is a force of nature in two showstoppers, "I Enjoy Being a Girl" and "Fan Tan Fannie", and the new orchestrations for these numbers are especially inventive. Granted, the packaging of this CD could have been more informative (it's actually pretty cheesy) but what you'll find inside is a marvelous rediscovery of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein score that deserves reconsideration.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Perfect keepsake of B'way 2002 revival
Having recently seen the show on Broadway and the film of the original on TV, I can vouch that most of the changes in the new book by Mr. Hwang are for the better.
Only one of the original songs has been dropped "The Other Generation", and it was a rehash of "Everything's up to date in Kansas City", no great loss.
"Fan Tan Fannie" is now the big climax, with a wonderfully garish new orchestration to match the great staging. Reversely "Sunday" is now a small, intimate number (it was a weird surreal scene in the film).
There is no more Madame Liang unfortunately. So "Chop Suey" is now sung by Master Wang / Sammy Fong (yes, they are now the same person).
The new character of the lady-artist's agent is more contrived. The actress is funny and leggy, but on the CD, she rather meows through "Grant Avenue" and, more damagingly, "Don't Marry Me".
Helen has disappeared, and her great song, "Love, look away" is now Mei-li's.
Lea Salonga is a far better singer than the original Ms. Umeki, who had also been directed to act almost like a half-wit. Ms. Salonga is so strong and touching that she gives the show an emotional anchor and a strong lead that were missing in the original.
Do go see the show, it's great, and the CD is a perfect keepsake of an evening at the theater. Attractive sleeve and booklet too.
