Average Rating: Rating: - The only thing missing for this biscuit joiner is the gravy This is by far the best plate joiner on the market. Before I expand further, the DEWALT 682 is a fine machine, as well as the MAKITA. The Dewalt's fence is extremely accurate as well as its fence. The Makita's fence is on the money accurate, but it requires a change and shims to join 45' angles. The PORTER-CABLE 557 has the best features of all without any of the flaws. The fence has a range from 0-135' without shims or removing the fence. The depth adjusment is simple and accurate. And as a bonus, it can cut six different profiles (0, 10, 20, FF, simplex, duplex). The two previously mentioned machines can cut the basics (0, 10, 20). If you plan on joining stock smaller than 1 1/2", then get this machine. It is well built and ergonomically comfortable. I got one and I have used the 1000 biscuits and some. Rating: - Great tool with some advice for future buyers The 557 is a well thought-out joiner with a fine finish. I had thought the enclosed instruction book was short on use and procedures, but the tool is really self explanatory. Really easy to cut biscuits in 3/4" stock, since cut opening (without fence) appears to be engineered to center in 3/4". Just three small concerns: (1) Dust bag requires frequent emptying. If not, dust will back up in chute and then begin exiting from blade area (like into your face). (2) Cutting depth was factory set too short, leaving gap in joints. A simple depth readjustment solved this problem. (3) After about 100 biscuit joints, motor has acquired a different sound. I'm going to tear the thing down and check it out; may just be trapped dust. As this is my first tool of this type, I don't have any experience to compare against, but I believe this is a well constructed, rugged tool, and would buy it again. Rating: - Great Tool This was my first Porter-Cable tool and I couldn't be happier. I've already gone through 100 bisquits! My biggest concern when purchasing a plate joiner was the fence. The 557's fence is superb. I've used a similar Dewalt machine and the 557 is in a class of its own, rock-solid! The height adjustment screw is kind of slow, but the fine threads allow for more precise adjustments. The height scale is handy too. My only complaint would be the dust bag. After 10-15 #20 cuts the bag fills up. Dust control in my shop isn't a critical issue, so I just use the elbow they send for shop vac connection and blow it on the floor. Minor inconvienence for such a great tool.
