Rating: - Ryobi 825r 4 Stroke Trimmer
I recently bought this type of trimmer last April 2001. Honestly speaking, this product has a strong engine to tackle big jobs. However, Just 3 days ago(July 23, 2001), the inner shaft of this trimmer broke and I can't find any place that sells this parts. I just guess that was one of the major breakdown of this product.. My brother-in-law owns one too, and experienced the same problem. I am not saying not to buy this product, but where I live, we use this type of product on a weekly basis and we find problems like this everyday. I do not recommend this product if you want a durable one..
Rating: - Great Tool
I ordered the 825 trimmer and the blower/vacuum attachment from Amazon.com two months ago. Amazon delivered everything about five days after I placed the order, beating their estimated delivery date by over a week. I have used the trimmer several times, once for three hours straight, and am absolutely satisfied. The 4-cylce engine has more than enough power for my uses and the bump-line-feed is really convenient. The "quick-link" system of changing accessories works very easily. I would recommend purchasing the shoulder strap if you plan on using it for more than 30 minutes at a time as it begins to get cumbersome. It is a little heavier than standard two-stroke trimmers, but the decreased vibration and noise more than make up for that. The blower/vacuum attachment attaches in less than twenty seconds and works very well for blowing grass clippings off the pavement. I have not tried blowing leaves with it, but it seems about as powerful as a regular blower and don't anticipate any problems. Overall, I would recommend this trimmer to anyone who needs/wants a little more power in their trimmer. The dozen or so attachments offered by Ryobi are widely available and from what I have seen, work well.
Rating: - Big Advantages Outweigh some Minor Drawbacks
I've put this Ryobi four-stroke trimmer to the test on varied types of trimming -- from grass around trees to rock garden borders to thick weeds in the ditch. First, be aware that this machine does weigh a BIT more than most 2-stroke machines. Over a long period of use (one hour plus), I found myself thinking that it would have been nice had this product come with a shoulder strap (a slot for a strap is present on the handle). On the other side, the engine vibrates much less than a two-stroke, and your hands will not feel nearly as "numb and tingling" as with the two-stroke trimmers. Another advantage with the 825r is that line changing is simply a matter of cutting two 10 foot lengths of line, snapping each into a hole in the head, and winding them in counter-clockwise. More importantly, the engine provides plenty of power. In nearly all of my work, I found that pressing the handle throttle lever in only half way was all the power I needed. For me, an "overpowered" tool is a big plus. One minor drawback, though, is that there is no "latch stop" on the throttle to keep it in the half-way position. I'm not sure why, but I also find that the 825r does not "dig in" as much when tilted away from the ground's surface. That's a plus, because, trimming is more even and there is far less flying of small stones and other debris. So I'd say the Ryobi has the added feature of safety. I have not tried the attachments, but given the engine's power,I am tempted. The interchange with attachments appears to be as easy as assembling vaccum cleaner tubes. You can usually find this product at major home improvement stores, and it seldom, if ever, goes for full retail price. One final word -- never, EVER, purchase non-line cutting attachments such as nylon or steel blades. Trimmers are not made for this type of cutting. After one experience of 15 minutes with nylon cutting blades, I had so much small debris flying at me with such high speed that I threw the blades out (lesson learned). I recommend the "mean string" which has a hexagon (not round) profile, and cuts more cleanly with less line used.
