Rating: - A CLASSIC GAME IS BACK!
What can be said about Mille Bornes? If you've played it before, you know how much fun it is. If you've NEVER played it, you must try it...you're in for a treat! Mille Bornes (which, by the way, correctly translates to "thousand milestones") is a simple game: be the first player to drive a total of 1000 kilometers on an imaginary road trip. Sounds easy enough, until your opponent starts hammering you with hazards such as flat tires, speed limits, and accidents! Add to this a few safety cards that can be played at any time to thwart potential hazards and the action can get fast and furious. Truly a fun game for everyone. Knowledge of the metric system (kilometers) is not required, and this is a fun way to get young kids to learn addition of large numbers above 20. Learning how to play will take about 10 minutes. This collector's edition contains cards with the original 60's artwork (so cool) and has a car-shaped card tray. This great game was out-of-print for several years. I'm glad to see someone is making it again. Grab yourself a copy while you can.
Rating: - Fun then... fun now
I highly recommed this game for anyone over age 7. My family played it many times when I was a kid, my parents played it with other adult couples and now my husband and I play it. The game is easy to play and fast paced. Basic addition skills are useful during the game to keep track of how far the other players have "traveled" and for adding up the scores after each hand. Good practice for young players.
Rating: - As French as 2CVs and Camembert!
This classic French after-dinner card game is fairly easy to learn and strikes an enjoyable balance between luck and skill. There is something genuinely compelling about the search for that final 25 kilometres of road before the draw pile is exhausted, or of giving your unfortunate adversary puncture after puncture! The skill factor lies mainly with assessing which cards have been used and deciding whether to put a few more kilometres between yourself and your rival or lagging behind to set a trap. A lot of the luck depends on who draws the "Véhicule Prioritaire" (Right of Way) card, which gives you a huge advantage and, in practice, makes you almost invincible. For non-Francophones, Mille Bornes sets marketed in the UK have the cards and rules printed in both English and French - a good way to pick up a few French terms which may prove useful some day! The large draw pile (106 cards) and the need to collect sets of different categories will probably appeal to those who enjoy games like Mah-Jong. A lot of fun for adults and older children!
