Rating: - The Good,Bad,Ugly.. the Best!!
Arguably one of the best epic westerns ever made and the ultimate male macho movie. Three men whose lives cross when the search for confederate money leads them through the war torn west of the Amercian Civil War. Clint Eastwood (Blondie/man with no name), Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes) and Eli Wallach (Tuco) are the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly respectively, each with their own agenda to get to a cemetary and a certain grave holding dirty loot. Sergio Leone's direction can be compared to the european comics of the time in which the movie screen, like comic strip panels, have close-ups of the characters with sweeping backgrounds. The DVD widescreen format restores Leone's great camera work and sense of composition. When shown on regular tv, the viewer gets an old or bad print of the film in pan and scan format and all that great compostion is lost. The score and theme song by Ennio Morricone is legendary and familiar and the characters are sweaty, dirty, and real. Its amazing that the story takes place in the American Civil War west, but it was actually filmed in the deserts of Spain. Clint Eastwood's man with no name is as cool and macho as ever, but Eli Wallach's role as the wanted bandit, "Tuco" is the standout character and he should have won an Oscar for that performance. The DVD has a trailer and interesting liner notes, but one wishes an actor or director commentary. Perhaps a special edition DVD will someday be released. Note: Classic Line(s) - "If you have to shoot..shoot! Don't talk!" and "When your hanging on that rope, you can feel the devil biting your a--!"
Rating: - CLASSIC WESTERN IN SUPERIOR QUALITY
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, never looked or sounded better than it does now! The trio of Clint Eastwood (the good), the late Lee Van Cleef (the bad), and Eli Wallach (the ugly) are so believable its scary. The best of the spaghetti westerns, it is given new life and new sound on DVD. The picture is brighter and the music more pronounced, check out Tuco's (Wallach) famous scene running thru the cemetary at the end while "Ectasy of Gold" is playing, the music is actually bone chilling. The movie is long (3 hours), however it would have been awesome if the 7 ommitted scenes were inserted in their proper place and not just where you view them seperately. A couple are not very important (extra footage of Tuco goofing with Blondie in the desert, extra dialogue at the bridge scene), but a couple are neat and important (Angel Eyes visits a Confederate camp looking for info, extra dialogue which is funny between Tuco and Blondie on the stage coach before they are captured, etc.) The bonus scenes make this a must-buy DVD for those who have the VHS version. Not perfect, it should be complete with all the scenes a couple of other reviewers mention inserted in their proper place. But, still an outstanding movie with Eli Wallach (Tuco) and his comedy adding an element missing in the first 2 spaghetti westerns!
Rating: - A Great, Great Film...
I remember seeing this film about 15 times over a two week period in the mid-1960's when it first came out and I was a young kid..I had seen Leone's two previous films in the Man With No Name trilogy and was looking forward to seeing this after seeing it advertised on TV...I was absolutely mesmorized by this "big" film/story...at that time, I had been a huge fan of the genre, John Wayne etc and I distinctly remember thinking how ironic is was that this "Italian" director had actually created the BEST western of all time...Leone depicted the American West as it actually was....I think it was like this movie depicted it...the casting was perfect and even to this day whenever I see Eli Wallach in something, I immediately make the association with TUCO...and I can't say enough about Ennio Morricone's score to this film and specifically the last half hour - the Ecstacy of Gold... and the music behind the climatic "show down" is bone chilling...the camera shots of just the three men's face's and the ticking watch - which was used in For A Few Dollars More -...all of it is so moving..it was only a few years later when Leone's MASTERPIECE came out - Once Upon A Time In The West - that I finally had to concede that The Good, The bad and The Ugly had been dethroned...now I'm a grown man and I still love to pull this video out when I just feel like watching a good movie and it immediately takes me back to the neighbourhood theather where I spent so many hours enthralled by this film over 30 years ago...I wish Leone could have lived forever and made so many more films.
