Rating: - A GREAT Step Workout Tape
I have five workout tapes and this is my favorite. First, I've been working out for years, yet it left me soaking wet in sweat. (Beginners can lower the step or reduce the movements.) Second, it's got a warmup, 40 minutes of aerobics, abs and a stretch and cool down. Third, the music is not intrusive...just enough to keep a beat. Finally, Gilad is a great leader, easy to follow, and his voice is not irritating. I always get a big smile when he yells out, "You got da moves!"
Rating: - gilad is the money!
i am not a big fan of home exercise tapes. the instructors tend to be a bit cheesy. at times gilad makes me laugh but he keeps me motivated throughout the entire video. this is a great workout. the abs are a huge bonus. the beat of the music makes it really easy to keep in step, although some of the jingles can stay with you for a few days and keep you up at night sometimes. the moves used on the step really get your heart going, are pretty easy to get down, and makes you feel like you are really working. i can really tell a difference in my calves, stomach, and arms. there are no weights involved but i think the constant involvement and extra movements of your arms throughout the workout help to build muscle and tone them. i enjoy working out with this video, and dare i say, actually have fun doing it. i was even able to tell a difference within the first week and i really need that immediate gratifaction to keep motivated. i am now a huge gilad fan and just placed an order for another one of his tapes. i think he is the one i will stick with.
Rating: - Excellent first step workout for men and women of all ages
Overview: "Gilad-Step Aerobics-On the Beach at Waikiki" is an excellent tape if you have decided to start getting serious about fitness. The instruction is thorough and Gilad's cueing is excellent. If you feel awkward with a dancy routine, this is the one for you. If you are an armchair quarterback type who would like to get rid of a little beer belly, but are worried that stepping might not be macho, you can display this video without embarrassment on your bookcase -- Gilad is a decathlete and the video starts off with him riding his motorcycle down the hill toward the beach. There are three men (one a very fit senior citizen) and two women in the video.Note to more experienced steppers: I wish I had started with this tape 6 months ago when I was just beginning to try step aerobics. But now, after working my way up to some pretty challenging step tapes, this one is a bit of a disappointment. I'm a 40-year-old woman and finally consider myself to be in the "intermediate" category when it comes to workout videos, but to get a decent workout (that is, work up a sweat and get my heart rate up) I have to put my step on the 10-inch height and jump ALL the moves (even the ones that are not shown that way). For intermediate to advanced steppers, some much better videos are Kathy Smith's "Power Step Workout" and "Peak Fat Burning Breakthrough," Gin Miller's "Reebok Intense Moves" and "Extreme Step," and Karen Voight's "Energy Sprint." The one thing this video has over those more intense ones is that the arm movements are a bit different, including a few that are reminiscent of self-defense moves. Also, because the aerobics section is a full 40 minutes, if you can get your heart rate high enough from the very beginning, you will get a good long even cardio workout. Details of the workout: After a nice long, easy warm-up, the workout is broken into four 10-minute segments. The first two segments are very elementary. They are an excellent introduction to the basic moves of step aerobics. The third segment is also quite basic, but it introduces a little bit of propulsion (jumping up in the air on the step), so the heart rate gets higher and you start to work up a sweat. The fourth segment combines all the moves you have learned in the first three segments (Gilad says it's to exercise your mind AND your body), with some extra propulsion if you want. Then there is a short, fairly easy abdominal muscle routine, followed by a few minutes of stretching. Details of the look and sound of the video: The video is from the early 1990's, so the outfits are kind of dated. The 3 men are wearing tight stretchy black pants and white tank tops, and the 2 women are wearing very high-legged leotards with what look like nylons (yuck!) cut off just below the knee. The background is the beach at Waikiki, which I have never visited, and from other reviews I expected it to be a beautiful, natural-looking setting. Instead, the view on the video is of an overdeveloped waterfront with HUGE hotels and a lot of people swimming in the background. The workout team is working out on what looks like a concrete pier, with occasional gawkers watching from the sidelines. The music is pleasant with a good beat, and Gilad has a nice deep encouraging voice with a cool cosmopolitan-sounding accent.
