Rating: - "Hart's War"
Hart's War (R) ****/5 Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell, Terence Howard, Cole Hauser, Linus Roache. Directed by: Gregory Hoblit. Synopsis: A trial is held in a P.O.W. camp, and the defendant's lawyer is desperate to prove him innocent. Special Features: Commentaries, Deleted Scenes with Commentary, Photo Gallery, Trailer. Review: Well MGM is on the ropes with good movie failing after good movie failing. Perhaps they need a new marketing department. "Hart's War" tells the tale of a young Lieutenant who is appointed to an obviously innocent black man who is accused of murdering a white man in a German P.O.W. camp. The German's agree to allow the court martial, and the trail begins. Everything seems to go against Lieutenant Hart from the beginning, and he is forced to unravel the lies to find who the murderer is and why he is being protected. In a stand for courage and against racism "Hart's War" is rousing stuff. This military drama is a refreshing break from the explosions and guts war films we are used to. Some minor battling/blood is present, but it is brief, critical to the plot, and not fight scenes (A fighter strafing run and bullet to the head). Bruce Willis gives a credible performance as the Colonel in charge of the U.S. prisoners, Terence Howard plays the accused very well, Cole Hauser is excellent as the bad guy, but Colin Farrell steals the show as the title character. Not the pick for bloody war film fans, but definitely for those who like history, or a good drama. Gregory Hoblit ("Frequency") is on top of his game again what a fantastic director. As for the DVD? MGM still uses flip discs! I hate flip discs! Sure it is an easy way to pack wide/full screen on one disc, but invariably fingerprints get on one side. Columbia/Tri Star can fit both and 2 times the special features on their single sided discs! Get a clue MGM! MGM DVD's usually are weak on special features and while this has more than some its mostly just commentaries. The disc is well worth picking up for the film, but I wish MGM's DVD designers would get a clue already.
Rating: - Marcel Who?!!
Marcel Iures , thats who! Portraying the commandant of Stalag VI, Marcel Iures steals the show from Bruce Willis , the nominal star of this unusual "war" movie.I was not sure of what to expect from this DVD other than most Bruce Willis roles are of a tough guy with some depth. The co-star , Colin Farrell , comes across as a real wimp-dimp little rich boy sent to war , inadvertantly captured in the Battle of the Bulge , interrogated , broken , and sent off to a stalag to sit out the remainder of the war.In the prison camp ,Col. McNamara , portrayed by Willis , shunts Lt. Hart , portrayed by Farrell , to the enlisted men's barracks instead of quartering him properly as an officer. Shortly thereafter , two Tuskeegee airmen (black pilots)who have been shot down are also sent to the enlisted barracks with Hart. A highly predictible racial scene ensues--an execution takes place-- and another racially inspired "setup" finds Lt. Hart as a defense counsel for the surviving black pilot. Through all these antics we observe Col. Visser (Marcel Iures) attempting to maintain order and discipline in the camp with an iron hand. As the story progresses , we see an unusual depth of character emerge from the man. In all , Iures' portrayal is what saves an otherwise somewhat weak movie. Altho' I gave this a 4 star rating , based primarily on the acting of Mr. Iures , it is probably only worthy of 3 stars otherwise. Overall an entertaining way to spend an evening at home.
Rating: - Intrigue, Heroism and Black Fighter Pilots
This is a tale of American prisoners of war in a German POW camp near the end of World War II. Racial violence breaks out when two P-51 Mustang pilots, both members of the famous "Tuskegee Airmen," a group of black fighter pilots, are captured and added to the camp's prisoner population. An especially bigoted white soldier is found murdered, and one of the black pilots is blamed, leading to a trial by his own fellow prisoners. One young lieutenant is picked to represent the accused, in what seems a hopeless effort before a kangaroo court. So, we have a plot where racial prejudice and justice can be explored and vicariously excoriated -- but alas, that's not the real issue at all as the plot takes an unexpected turn near the end.The plot is a bit complex and the ending somewhat abrupt. I enjoyed the film, but it won't resonate in my memory as anything special or great. However, I did enjoy the realism of the POW camp in wintry, war-battered Germany, the German Commandant who seems like he might be an honorable man under better circumstances, the machismo of Bruce Willis as the American Colonel who longs to escape and rejoin the war, and the P-51 Mustang fighters who shoot up the German forces with wild abandon. Great acting and realism! A better plot would have made this film a real winner.
