Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Thoroughly entertaining!Terribly heartbreaking. A winner.
Oh sure, in the nineties (2000s?), the gang scenes may not live up to the cold blooded ruthlessness of the times, but, hey, get a life! If that's what you're looking for, go find a pointless Tupac flick and get your 'hood' fix there. This movie is more than that. This movie is for movie and/or musical lovers that love a well told, well acted story. You can feel the heat and grittiness of the city the story takes place in. You can understand (though not necessarily agree with) the mutual hate between the rival gangs. But you can also agree with the way Tony and Maria tragically try to cross rigid lines drawn by their factions. The songs are outstanding- even humorous. They tell a lot of the story in themselves, as good musicals will. "Cool, Officer Krupke", and "America" are some of the most brilliant scenes in movie, and musical history. And the opening scene that introduces the rival gangs with the "West Side Story Theme Song" as the backdrop still gives me chills. It too is one of those great Hollywood scenes of all time. Guys, watch it with a gal so you can still claim manhood when your boyz can't believe you watched it. That way you won't miss out on a great flick. With the advent of surround sound home theatre, this movie will be even more a treat to view at home.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful songs and choreography, classic love story
"West Side Story" is the brilliant adaption of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" set in 1960s New York City, sans gangs, fights, and tremendous rivalry.

The story itself is great and the acting superb, but what really makes this movie worthwhile are the snappy songs and phenomenally choreographed dance numbers. No one could resist tapping their feet along to the upbeat, exciting "Mambo," the hilarious and catchy "America," or the terrifically entertaining "Cool" (and who could forget "Gee, Officer Krupke"?). The only thing that gets a bit tedious are the love songs--I get a little tired of seeing Tony (Richard Beymer) and Maria (Natalie Wood) confess their undying love with sappy songs (though "Tonight" is a gem).

The performances are absolutely outstanding--Richard Beymer's Tony was great, Natalie Wood's Maria was extraordinary, particularly near the end, and George Chakiris's Bernardo was cool, calm, and collected (but also despicable at times). The real standout, however, was Rita Moreno's Anita, energetic and jazzy throughout the whole film.

See this movie--if not for the acting or storyline, then for the songs and dances. The best musical I have ever seen, no questions asked.

Now...MAMBO! ;)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GREAT FOR THE FAMILY
Though the youngest members of your family will not necessarily get what subtlety exists in this epic romance, and there is much implied violence, this classic musical is an excellent introduction to today's generation the real heat, talent and creativity behind those GAP commercials...The score alone remains one of the most memorable and emotionally satisfying Broadway scores ever; the choreography is a non-stop show of balletic grace, beauty and violence. Set in the real streets of New York, this movie has it all: a Romeo and Juliet love story, featuring the adorable and winning Natalie Wood, who despite the fact that she is lip-synching to Marnie Nixon's lovely soprano, does a smashing job in the role of Maria. Richard Beymer, who continued to play Tony onstage for many years, is goofily winning as Tony. Rita Moreno adds fire and spice in the flashy role of Anita. Robert Wise, who would later helm The Sound Of Music, works magic with Jerome Robbins; the film is gorgeous to look at. Why oh why oh why can we not produce a musical of such immediate power and lasting emotion today? I truly believe that if the right creative team took the chance on something as hip and well-drawn as this, people would flock once again to see musicals on film. Buy it.
